DAVIS, CA – (May 17, 2018) On May 16, 2018, The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy announced its seventh annual U.S. Dairy Sustainability Award winners at the Morton Arboretum just outside of Chicago, Ill. Award winners represent dairies, businesses, and partnerships whose practices improve the well-being of people, animals, and the planet. “This year’s winners showcase how a drive to be economically viable, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable is at the heart of our dairy industry, from farm to table,” said Barbara O’Brien, president of the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy.

BioFiltro is excited to announce that Royal Dairy, of Royal City, WA, received the 2018 U.S. Outstanding Dairy Farm Sustainability award in recognition of the millions of worms, microbes, and bacteria that dairy farmer Austin Allred has put to work. The 200,000 gallon per day BIDA® System was commissioned in August 2017 and has averaged 75% removal in Total Nitrogen, 85% removal in Total Phosphorus, and 94% removal in Total Suspended Solids from the dairy’s flush water. The BIDA® System catalyzes the digestive power of worms, microbes, and bacteria to convert water generated from the dairy’s flush lanes into a reusable asset and contaminants into worm castings, a nutritious soil amendment – Allred’s system is estimated to generate about 2,000 cubic yards every 18 months which can be beneficially applied to orchards, vineyards, and crops. Furthermore, as the entire treatment process takes about 4 hours, the system reduces odors and green house gases while still enabling Allred to reduce the amount of area need for land application and nutrient management by almost 90%. Matt Tolbirt, CEO of BioFiltro, notes that “BioFiltro has been honored by the opportunity to work alongside Austin since our pilot in 2015 – he inspires everyone around him to constantly push the envelope and think outside of the box. He and the whole team at Royal Dairy deserve the recognition of being pioneers in dairy sustainability.”

The Royal Dairy facility is the largest dairy system that BioFiltro has in operation worldwide. Allred states “BioFiltro was the first system we found that could provide an economical, environmental, and efficient solution capable of treating our green water. The simplicity of using worms and biology is brilliant.” He also noted that introducing innovation to his dairy has enabled him to offer farm workers the ability to be on the forefront of new technologies and professional opportunities as farming techniques advance with the times.
