The VermiDigest by BioFiltro

March 2025

Greetings from BioFiltro! It has been cold this winter, but our worms have still been hard at work!

Check It Out

Check out this video for a sneak peek at our new BIDA® design. We have eliminated the concrete walls from our larger BIDA® systems, with these systems commonly treating livestock manure or wastewater from high volume processors. This new design reduces the capital cost and environmental footprint by minimizing concrete, as well as simplifies operations.

Team Expansion: Welcome to the Worm Family!

New Team members 2025-01-15

In recent months, we have expanded our worm family and welcomed several new team members. We are thrilled that James Wallace, Evonne Gilmore, Norberto Butendieck, Jason Gustafson, David Rabena, and Marcos Felipe have joined our team. Each member brings valuable experience to our team and we are thrilled for worm family to take on new opportunities this year!

Frequently Asked Questions

"How does BioFiltro’s BIDA system perform in cold weather?"

BIDA® beds consist of wood chips and/or shavings and are typically around 3 feet deep, which provides plenty of toasty insulation for the worms and biology. You will even see steam coming off the beds on a cold winter morning! BioFiltro even has a system on Antarctica treating wastewater from a Chilean air force base. “That system is treating domestic wastewater”, Sales Engineer, Sarah Haupt, explains. “Domestic wastewater—water from toilets, showers, kitchens—is relatively warm, and is our “cleanest” waste stream as far as wastewater constituents like BOD, TSS, & TN are concerned. In my opinion, BioFiltro’s worm farm at Royal Dairy in Washington is our most impressive example of cold weather tolerance because our worms are treating almost-freezing flush water from the cow stalls in the winter.” Freezing temperatures are a design consideration rather than a biological problem. Extreme cold means water could freeze and burst pipes, so BioFiltro installs an extra sump for water to drain into between BIDA irrigation cycles, and programs a “winter mode” button on the touch screen that controls our PLC [Programmable Logic Controller]. With this adaptation, water will automatically drain our irrigation lines fully during freezing temperatures, which prevents water from freezing inside pipes and causing damage.

Recent Events

Annual California Bioresources Alliance Symposium

BioFiltro’s VP of Quality & R&D, Patrick Beckett, participated in a panel on the future of compost at the 19th Annual California Bioresources Alliance Symposium at UC Davis in November of last year.

WateReuse Industrail Reuse Conference

This past November, our BioFiltro team attended the WateReuse Industrial Reuse Conference in Indian Wells, CA. The conference was a great place to walk the road to water positivity. Our Sales Engineer, Sarah Haupt, discussed at the conference how BioFiltro uses worms to clean water, air, and build soil.

Sustainable Agriculture Summit

Our team had a grand time at the Sustainable Agriculture Summit towards the end of 2024. Matias and Sanjar are pictured here enjoying the summit with our rebranded booth behind them. If you want to check out our rebranded booth in more detail, you can visit us at our future events this year. Stay updated by checking our newsletter and following us on social media!

Unified Grape and Wine Symposium

Towards the beginning of this year, our worm family had a booth set up at the Unified Grape and Wine Symposium. Thank you to our clients who stopped by to discuss their systems and thank you to those who came by to learn more about our worms. Sarah and Federico are pictured having a great time at the event!

CLFP Food Processing Expo

This February, our team attended CLFP’s Food Processing Expo in Sacramento. We enjoyed talking to industry leaders and being able to talk about how our worms can be beneficial for food processors.

World Agriculture Expo

During February, the BioFiltro team participated in the World Ag Expo. Located in Tulare, CA , this expansive event was the perfect place for our team to talk about how our worms can benefit the agricultural industry.

Americas Conference 2025: The Future is Now

We attended the Americas Conference 2025 – The Future is Now: Bridging Business, Technology, and Humanity, hosted at the INSEAD San Francisco Hub For Business Innovation. Federico Pumpin, VP of Sanitary, Food, and Beverage represented BioFiltro at this event and explained, “It revolved a lot around AI, but it also had a sustainability side of it. Part of it was a wine tasting, where I participated in a panel with two wine experts, including Tor Kenward, one of Napa’s Founding fathers, owner of Tor winery. I added the sustainability component into the conversation, telling them about what BioFiltro can do to recycle water, build soil health and help achieve sustainable operations, something that is becoming more and more important in California with the erratic climate behavior. People were very excited about the technology and asked a lot of questions.”

Thank you for being a part of our journey, and we look forward to continuing to serve you with our worm-powered wastewater solutions.
