The VermiDigest by BioFiltro

March 2024

Greetings from BioFiltro! We have been wriggling around with activity this Spring and have exciting news to share with our worm family.

New Installations

BioFiltro is proud to partner with the Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco, WA for a new pilot program set to study the effectiveness of worm-powered wastewater treatment on airport deicing wastewater. Check out the press release below!

Pasco, WA – Tri-Cities Airport (PSC) is pleased to partner with BioFiltro for an exciting pilot program that will study the effectiveness of worm-powered wastewater treatment on airport deicing wastewater. Deicing is critical for aircraft in the winter months, but deicing fluids are predominantly made of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and other ingredients that are potentially dangerous for the environment if not properly collected and disposed.

“It sounds strange to use worms to treat deicing fluid, but we’re excited to tap into this innovative, sustainable way to manage a necessary aviation product,” said Buck Taft, Airport Director. “We hope this pilot program will be a success story for the entire aviation industry.”

He brings extensive expertise to his role as Chairman of the Board at BioFiltro as an executive and legal counsel. Steve visited the office in March to discuss BioFiltro’s plans for 2024 and announce his new role. Our team is excited for Steve and grateful for the in person time with him this month!

Alberto Dairy System in May

Alberto Dairy in Stanislaus County will soon be home to about 8 acres of BioFiltro’s vermifiltration system to clean 100% of their liquid manure. We will be breaking ground on this exciting new project in May of this year.

The project will significantly reduce the dairy’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, predominantly in the form of methane emissions from the existing anaerobic lagoon. BioFiltro’s system will also transform the manure into a nutrient-rich vermicompost, which increases soil health and adds carbon to crop soils. The vermifilter is expected to remove more than 80% of the volatile solids and nitrogen from the liquid manure, thereby reducing the risk of contaminating groundwater.

It’s no surprise that Alberto Dairy is an early adopter of this innovative technology. Established in 1981, the family has implemented many sustainable practices, including a closed-herd system to ensure optimal health and low disease rates, composting, a climate-controlled calf barn, and much more.

  • BioFiltro’s system will reduce GHG emissions from manure management from 4,947 to 1,238 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e) a year.
  • The overall project improvements, including new mechanical separators, will reduce GHG emissions by 7,654 MTCO2e annually.
  • Approximately 1,740,000 gallons of manure water will be recycled every day.
  • The vermifilter will produce approximately 25,278 dry tons of vermicompost over five years, enough to boost the soil health of about 1,087 acres.

By implementing this project, Alberto Dairy’s worm farm will have a positive environmental impact on climate, soil quality, water quality and quantity used, and air quality.

Recent Events

Earlier this month, BioFiltro hosted the Humphrey Fellowship Program at UC Davis. This selective program brings accomplished mid-career professionals with a commitment to public service from countries with developing and emerging economies to the United States for one year of non-degree study and practical professional development. Engaging with the community offers opportunity for new perspectives and societal growth, and we cherished hosting the fellows for an evening of snacks and an introduction to BioFiltro. We are thankful that Hipolito Amaral Ximenes, Arslan Garryyev, Anthony Kullie, and Bagher Yousefi joined us and we continue to enjoy the process of this program.

BioFiltro’s BIDA was included in the California League of Food Producers new 2024 edition of the Manual of Good Practice for Land Application of Food Processing/Rinse Water. Our BIDA system was listed as an effective solution for secondary biological treatment to remove Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) by 90%. We encourage food processors who need to reduce these constituents to contact BioFiltro today for a quote! Check Out the Manual Here!
