A Zero Waste Solution

The filter media and worm bedding in our BIDA vermifiltration system is typically wood chips or another low-value carbon media. To protect California from wildfires, the US Forest Service implements projects focused on forest health and fuel reduction, including thinning, prescribed fires, and fuel break creation. BioFiltro takes these cleared logs and uses them in our wastewater treatment system, where we are then generating clean water and vermicompost to boost soil health!

Frequently Asked Questions

"Does the BIDA System Have any Byproducts?"

All that comes out of BioFiltro’s BIDA System is clean water and vermicompost! Wastewater passes through a biologically active filter bed populated by earthworms and microbial communities. As organic matter is broken down by these organisms, a stabilized byproduct known as vermicompost is produced. This material is composed of worm castings, decomposed organic matter, and microbial biomass, and is rich in humic substances and nutrients.

"What are the Benefits of Vermicompost?"

All Vermicompost has many benefits when applied to land including:

  • Enhanced Soil Organic Carbon (SOC): Vermicompost is high in stable organic carbon, which helps increase SOC levels when applied to soil. This supports long-term carbon sequestration and improves overall soil health.
  • Soil Structure & Water Retention: The humic acids in vermicompost enhance soil aggregation, porosity, and water-holding capacity.
  • Nutrient Availability: Vermicompost provides a slow-release source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients, promoting sustainable plant growth.
  • Microbial Activity: It boosts beneficial soil microbial populations, which play key roles in nutrient cycling and disease suppression.

"What VermiCompost Products Does BioFiltro Offer?"

BioFiltro offers three different vermicompost products: vermicompost, vermi-mulch, and worm castings. Check out our vermicompost products in the image on the left. Interested in finding out what product is best for you? Email us at info@biofiltro.com .
