The VermiDigest by BioFiltro

May 2025

Greetings from BioFiltro! This month, we are spotlighting a new podcast, how worms are working wonders across industries, and more.

Check It Out

Let the Worms Do the Work

BioFiltro was featured on a recent episode of Seen & Herd: Industry Updates for the Modern Dairy Family, hosted by Western United Dairies. In this episode of Seen & Herd, Paul Sousa sits down with Steve Rowe, of BioFiltro, and Sanjar Taromi, Livestock Lead, to dive into a solution gaining traction among California dairies: vermifiltration. This natural, low-tech system uses wood chips and worms to significantly reduce nitrogen loads and methane emissions from dairy wastewater, at little to no cost for producers. With changing water regulations, looming methane mandates, and new funding opportunities, this conversation offers real, actionable insights for dairies looking to build a future-proof manure management toolbox. Plus, learn how these systems can expand irrigation options, improve nutrient management flexibility, and even coexist with digesters.

Vermifiltration for Landfill Leachate

Pilot Sampling

In 2024, BioFiltro completed a successful 6-month pilot demonstrating the power of vermifiltration to biologically treat landfill leachate—arguably one of the toughest waste streams out there. The results speak for themselves: 67% average removal of BOD₅, 57% TSS, and 61% NH₃-N over the course of the pilot. Our hardworking Eisenia andrei worms continue to show impressive resilience and treatment potential, there were even worm cocoons present, which is an important indicator of filter health. By reducing organics and solids biologically, vermifiltration can reduce the operating costs of downstream polishing systems like carbon or membrane filters.

Stay tuned as we dig deeper into vermifiltration as a sustainable leachate solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

"What is BioFiltro's Control Unit?"

Meet the brains behind BioFiltro’s worm-powered systems: our fully integrated Control Unit. Housed in a compact shipping container, this plug-and-play hub simplifies operations by automating flows, monitoring key water quality parameters, and collecting real-time data to support compliance reporting. With remote access via phone, tablet, or computer, operators can stay connected from anywhere. Each Control Unit includes everything from flow meters and sensors to pumps and a programmable logic controller (PLC)—and can be tailored with add-ons like solids separation, pH adjustment, and solar power for off-grid sites. By making wastewater treatment smarter and more efficient, BioFiltro’s Control Unit helps clients save time, reduce manual labor, and meet regulatory goals with confidence.
